The following are some guidelines for new and existing managers. Most management activity takes place before and after the game. The success in running a great game is in the preparation.

Before each Game

  • Check if your team is on Canteen Duty at Ern Holmes Oval. Organise a volunteer roster. Each team normally does 3 hours + so break the roster into 60 or 90 minute time slots
  • Advise parents of Time and Venue of the forthcoming match
  • Select 2 people to vote for the Best & Fairest along with either the coach/manager or other person who has a developed knowledge of the game
  • Advise who will be Boundary Umpire, Runner and Goal Umpire
  • Ensure equipment is ready - match ball in good condition, pump, flags, umpire coat, spare pens, first aid kit, runner and boundary umpire shirt, coaches bib (must be worn)
  • For junior players organise oranges or other refreshment
  • If game is cancelled, advise parents (you should always have contact details for all players)
  • Login to FootyWeb and prepare the Team Sheet, print out 4 copies

Before Kickoff

Arrive at the ground 30-45 minutes before kickoff

  • Provide instruction to the voters what to look out for in the voting to allow player assessment
  • Provide voting slips
  • Hand out coat and flags to Goal Umpire
  • Hand out shirts to Runner / Boundary Umpire
  • Hand out Coaches bib
  • Adjust team sheet if required (additions / deletions). These will need to be entered in FootyWeb later
  • Look for and introduce yourself to the opposition manager, check player numbers, swap team sheet (signed copy)
  • Hand in signed copy of Team sheet to groundsman and the match ball (deadline before end of first quarter)
  • Introduce yourself and know the names of the umpires (you will need this to complete the umpire report)

During Play

  • Assist Coach with substituion
  • Ensure water bottles are carted on/off the field
  • Record attendance and goals scored
  • Check score with Goal umpires each quarter (they should meet at centre field each quarter to verify)
  • Ensure players, spectators abide by the Junior AFL Code of Conduct
  • Record any injuries on the Injury Report

After each Game

  • Take completed votes, place in envelope, write game details (date, division/grade, opposition team, round) and hand to our Club Statistics volunteer (see Club Officials on web site) at training the following week
  • Record games played and goals scored for each player
  • Collect Match ball
  • Remind coach to complete Umpires Report online and submit Match Report
