Eulogy - Bill Carey (delivered by Tom Woodrow at Bills funeral on Monday 20 January, 2014 at All Saints Anglican Church, Parramatta).

Good Morning Family and Friends of Bill,

My name Is Tom Woodrow and, along with a few others here today I got to know Bill though his long association with the Pennant Hills Junior Australian Football Club. Together we served with Bill on the club committee and we were lucky enough to count him as a friend.

Bill was a legend at our club. He co-founded the club over 40 years ago. He was still senior Vice President and a Life Member. Bill's long association with Australian Rules football in Sydney is detailed in the order of service, but his connection with the junior club was deep, and he was always concerned about the welfare of the club.

Never one afraid to voice his opinion, Bill challenged us to ensure the club always stood for the values it had when he founded it, that is, it catered to players of all abilities and the goal was to ensure that they all enjoyed their football. These values are stated in our recently revised club constitution and are just one part of Bill's extraordinary legacy at the club.

Right up until last year Bill was still taking on the role of ground manager every Sunday, in winter, straight after he had been to church. This was a job the rest of us feared to take, as at some point during the day it would inevitably mean having to deal with a highly strung coach or an overly enthusiastic parent. Bill handled these situations with complete calm and experience, employing just the right amount of diplomacy, or authority as required.

The news of Bill's passing left us all in shock and he will be deeply missed at the club. The 2014 season will not seem the same without his presence.

Letting everyone in the club know about Bill, I sent a note out which included this quote from Winston Churchill:

'We make a living by what we get; we make a life by what we give'

There is no doubt Bill gave his all to our club and enriched the lives of all of us who were involved with the club.

Bill, it was an honour to know you, and work with you in a role where you gave enjoyment to hundreds of kids and their parents over the years. With your strong Christian faith it is great to know you are in a better place and I can only hope to see you there one day, and with us all restored to youthful vigour one of the first things I would like to do is pull on the boots and play in your team in the game you love.

Tom Woodrow - 20 January, 2014
